ONE BILLION DOWNLOADED APPS…

1,000,000,000!

In 9 months.

app_sales-copy

You can read all the details in TechCrunch.

Apple reports roughly 37MM multi-touch products in-market at the end of Q1 2009, suggesting that there have been roughly 30 apps downloaded for each device.

In 9 Months!!

I think my new colorful metaphor for “fast,” instead of, “faster than a scalded dog,” will now be “faster than an iPhone app.”

iPhone Keeping Lots of Companies Healthy

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Last week it was the announcement that Apple had significantly beaten expectations for earnings in their 1st quarter of FY 2009,, including the sale of 22MM iphones for the QUARTER. I don’t have current estimates of total US market for cell phones, but in 1st quarter of 2008 the total was 31MM handsets sold, so the market share implication for iPhone is HUGE.

Today I read an announcement about greystripe.com and hitting more than 140MM downloads of its various apps, primarily iPhone based. I read about that in Techcrunch.

I’m reminded of a comment one of my colleagues made in 1994 regarding the Internet and saying “this might just turn into something.”

I’m thinking that might speak to the iPhone, too….

All I Want for Christmas

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Is a new iBreath blood alcohol monitor and FM iPhone transmitter all-in-one device.

Somehow, this seems a little like two-rights-making-a-wrong; the fm transmitter “encouraging” me to drive, and the breathalizer perhaps encouraging me not to. Still, what a cool little device, and a great reference check if you’re about to drive when maybe you shouldn’t be.

iPhone Battery a HUGE Disappointment

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

I love this phone. And hate the battery life.

Please understand; when I’m in the office, I’m by no means a power user.

Typically, I power it up in the morning before going to work, and the phone is “on” but on standby from that point. During the work day, I manage maybe 20 – 30 emails, and spend maybe a half-hour in one of the apps, games or on the web. I probably make only about 4 – 6 phone calls, because most calls are through the office line. I leave around 6, and by then I’m getting a “10% battery remaining” warning message, such that the phone may be dead before I get home.

That’s pretty pathetic. Apple should be embarrassed by this.

My Mac pal, Rob, tells me this is a huge issue that’s cost a bunch of Apple employees their jobs, and that the announcement they’re making next week will address this through a lighter operating system that won’t drain the battery so fast.

I would be reluctant to give up this phone because of all the amazing things it does. But I know when I’m away from the office and counting on this phone a LOT more than I do when I’m in town, I’m going to be thinking dark thoughts and could easily be swayed to a phone that has many of these features, even in a less cool wrapper, but with more reasonable (even 24 hours!!) battery life.

New GPhone Puts Pressure on Blackberry

Friday, August 15th, 2008

In a briefing reported today in the New York Times Technology section, the Google Smartphone is expected to debut before year’s end on T-Mobile. Reputed to look and act alot like the iPhone as seen in this video, the element that sets this phone apart is the slide out keyboard.

Anyone who’s been using the new iPhone knows the problems with texting on its keyboard, and this will advantage the Googlephone somewhat. But purists and enthusiasts of cool will not penalize Apple much for this. The real risk is to Blackberry, who is lagging in providing a combination touchpad/full browser phone as well as their keypad without turning it into a device that is too bulky.

Great move, Google, to finally get this phone to market (almost), but the threat I see is way more to Blackberry’s market share than that of Apple.

Best of 2008 Really Spans Past 5 Years

Monday, June 2nd, 2008
PC World today released it’s top 100 best tech products for 2008. Their top 5 picks were Hulu, the iPhone, Facebook, Windows XP and the Lenovo Thinkpad X300.

Is it just me or are two of these old news and the Thinkpad a big yawn?

I totally agree with iPhone and Hulu, although it’s hard to put Hulu at #1 of 100 products and sites when considering the revolutionary nature of iPhone (#2) and Nintendo Wii (#16). There are lots of other arguably great brands on this list, but many of these are 3 – 5 years old. And some are repeats of last year. Wii for example was #3 last year.

This is really a popularity contest of the editors and readers of anything that’s on the market vs. a critical technical review and way of drawing attention to innovative new products from the past 12 months.

I guess that’s OK, but not what I would expect from PC World.

iPhone Takes Over Planet, Eats Children and Pets

Thursday, August 16th, 2007
OK. That’s a bit of a stretch, but the past two days’ posts on Textually.org have looked like that’s what’s coming next. Evidence that iPhone is quickly gaining share of culture:

Evidence of gaining global traction…France Telecom’s stock rising 1.5% on the rumor that it won the French iPhone contract.

Whew. Quite a busy two days. I wonder what the next 48 hours will bring?

Maybe iPhone will take over the planet and in a fit of totalitarian gluttony begin eating children and pets. I think the odds are about even….

iPhone Warning Advocates Hot Spot Branding

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

You walk into your local deli and order a bagel and coffee to have an excuse to sit down and go online. 20 minutes to chat, check the scores…and hand over your identity to strangers, maybe.

If you’ve heard the buzz over the past few days about iPhone security hacks, it’s as much a wake-up call about wi-fi hotspots as for iPhone owners.

Basically any unscrupulous wi-fi operator with the wherewithal can filter the traffic through their wireless router and, through data fuzzing, find security breaches in the devices using their connection. Given some vulnerabilities in your browser, this may give them an entry point for scouring your stored information and capturing personal data.

And right now its possible to do on the iPhone.

There’s a pretty good overview to the security issues and the iPhone problem if you want to check it out here.

Beyond fixing the bugs, the bottom line seems to be that hotspot branding, so as to only use trusted hotspots, will grow increasingly important as we better understand the potential to be vulnerable when we’re wirelessly online.
